A Wi-Fi site survey measures or models how radio signals behave in your building so access points can be placed where they work, rather than where it was convenient to run a cable.
Three kinds of survey
- Predictive: software models the building from floor plans and materials. Ideal for new builds and budgeting.
- Passive: a surveyor walks the site measuring signal and interference without connecting.
- Active: a surveyor connects to the network and measures throughput, roaming and retries.
When it matters most
High-density spaces such as classrooms, auditoriums and conference centres; warehouses with metal racking; hospitals with thick walls; and any site with voice or real-time applications.
What a good report contains
- Heat maps for coverage and capacity
- Access point locations, mounting heights and channel plan
- Cabling and switch port requirements
- Validation results after installation
A survey costs far less than adding or moving access points after installation, and it gives you a baseline to troubleshoot against later.
